Application of Polybutene
Polybutylene is composed of long-chain hydrocarbon formed by polymerization of isobutene, and is extremely stable under normal conditions. It is transparent nonnoxious high-consistency semi-solid polymer free of impurities.
Lubricant
Polybutenes are utilized for metallurgical oil, 2-cycle engine lubricant, Compressor oil, viscosity index enhancer.
Metallurgical Oil
Different to other mineral oils generally used as metallurgical oil, Dealim's Polybutene would be able to solve the pollution problem if used as processing oil for non-ferrous metals like Aluminum, Copper by reason of no need to take washing process before heat treatment thanks to virtually absent carbon remnant. High workability and environmentally friendly thanks to no odor.
Lubricant for 2-Cycle Engine
2-cycle engines are used in scooters, lawn mowers, jet-skis. Such 2-cycle engines produce heavy smoke when quick accelerating and/or stopping because sludge is created in the engine at high temperatures. When compared to mineral water, its decomposing property at high temperatures makes it possible to diminish any smoke with no carbon remnant, and to lengthen the lifecycle of the 2-cycle engine with less sludge inside the engine. Many other countries who regulate the smoke legislate the compulsory use of polybutene.
Compressor Oil
Compressor oil is used in high pressure processing like LDPE (Low Density Poly- Ethylene). For there are no sulfur and impurities in Polybutene, dangers like anticatalyst may be eliminated.
Viscosity Index Enhancer
The viscosity index enhancer produced from the polybutene has the advantage that shows the change of viscosity in accordance with the temperature of the lube oil.
Adhesives
Pressure Sensitive Adhesive(PSA)
Polybutene improves the tack and peel strength of elastomer. Polybutene partially replaces tackifier, so it is economical. Major application of PSA is general & insulation tapes.
Hot Melt Adhesives(HMA)
Polybutene increases the melt index and maintains flexibility at low temperatures. Polybutene is also fairly compatible with EVA, SBS, SIS, PE etc. The main application of HMA is packing, binding, sanitary products like diapers.
Cauking & Sealing Compounds
Caulks & Sealants are materials that are installed into a gap or joint to prevent water, winddirt or other contaminants through gap. Polybutene is used for caulks and sealant as tackifer and plasticizer with excellent non-drying UV stability and tackinessThe main use of caulks & sealants with polybutene is construction, automotive, ship-buildingand refrigerator.
Electrical Insulator
Polybutene is used for the condenser, Jelly compound for no impurities and superior electrical insulating property.
Cable Jelly Compound
Having thermal stability, waterproofness, low power factor and is used for Petroleum jelly compound.
Insulating Oil for Condenser
Thermal stability, oxidation stability and electrical properties are superior.
Rubber Modifier
- Used as the plasticizer of vulcanized elastomer containing natural/synthetic rubbers.
- Polybutene has a superior compatibility when rubber formulating.
- Polybutene is mainly used as an adhesive of rubber base.
- Even a small amount of polybutene provides plasticity and adhesion of the Elastomer.
Fuel/Lube Additive
There is only one double-bond per polybutene molecule, and fuel additive, Lubricant additive may be manufactured through the chemical reaction.
Fuel Detergents
With the addition to fuels of gasoline driven or diesel driven vehicles, fuel detergents eliminate and prevent at the same time the carbonated dross or sludges piled up in/on fuel injector, inlet/outlet valves, combustion chamber and etc. With the application of fuel detergents, engine abstersion, power enhancement, fuel saving, smoke emission reduction effects may be expected.
Lub-Oil Dispersants
As a main ingredient of dispersant which is one of additives of lubricants, polybutene is used. The dispersant functions to maintain the inside of the engine clean all the time by dispersing oil oxide compound or combusted deposits, foreign matter and impurities in the oil
Resin Plasticizer
Used as an additive of plastic or rubber.
- Polybutene is used as a plasticizer to Olefin, Styrenic, Modified resin.
- Polybutene has fair usability to normal resins including PS, PE, PP.
- When Polybutene is added, physical, mechanical and thermal properties including melting flow, impact strength, tensile strength, heat deflection temperature are improved.
The demand of wrap films gets increased as industries develop and household income increases. Wrap films used to be a mixed product of LDPE, EVA, but is being substituted to LLDPE.

Asphalt Modifier
Used as a plasticizer of the asphalt compounding.
When polybutene is added, under coating for automobiles has superior vibration isolation, corrosion prevention, low temperature flexure, and the asphalt/rubber sheet prevents the breakage thanks to the improved tensile strength and low-temperature resistance.
Has the advantage of extending the lifecycle of the asphalt compound.
Application : Under-coating of automobiles, Rubber sheet, Electricity insulating compound of the asphalt.
Gum base
Polybutene passes the standards regulation designated by the Korea Food Additives Board, so it can be used as a base material for chewing and bubble gums.
